RuggedCable® System

RuggedCable systems are used with Aqua TROLL® and Level TROLL® instruments and with the TROLL® 9500 water quality instrument. The cable includes conductors for power and communication signals, a strength member, and a Kellems® grip to securely anchor an instrument to the cable. Cables are available in standard and custom lengths.

RuggedCable types

  • Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) jacketed, vented or non-vented
  • Tefzel® (ETFE fluoropolymer) jacketed, vented
Cables are available with identical uphole and downhole ends (“female” bayonet-type Twist-Lock connectors) or with a stripped and tinned uphole end (see below). Twist-Lock connectors mate with an instrument body, TROLL® Com communication cable, desiccants, and other accessories.

Vented cable is designed for use with vented pressure/level sensors (gauged measurements). The cable vent tube ensures that atmospheric pressure is the reference pressure applied to the sensor diaphragm. Vented cable includes a small desiccant cap.

Non-vented cable may be used with non-vented Level TROLL instruments (absolute measurements).

Stripped and Tinned RuggedCable systems
Stripped and tinned cables are available for convenient connection to Aqua TROLL, Level TROLL, and TROLL 9500 instruments. In place of the uphole Twist-Lock connector, this cable ends in bare conductors for wiring to a logger or controller using SDI-12, analog (4-20 mA), or Modbus RS485/RS232 communication protocols. Vented cable includes an outboard desiccant to protect against condensation in high-humidity environments.

Wiring instructions for stripped and tinned cables

  • Aqua TROLL instruments – Connect an Aqua TROLL instrument to a controller or logger for communication via 4-20 mA, SDI-12, RS485 Modbus, or RS232 Modbus (with a customer-supplied converter). Female and male versions available.
  • Level TROLL instruments – Connect a Level TROLL instrument to a controller or logger for communication via 4-20 mA, SDI-12, RS485 Modbus, or RS232 Modbus (with a customer-supplied converter). Female and male versions available.
  • TROLL 9500 instruments – Connect a TROLL 9500 instrument to RS485 Modbus or RS232 Modbus. Female and male versions available.
RuggedCable Specifications
Jacket options

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)
Tefzel® (ETFE fluoropolymer)

Connector Titanium, 18.5 mm (0.73 in) O.D. and Delrin
Conductors 6 conductors, 24 AWG, polypropylene insulation
Diameter 6.7 mm (0.265 in)

Vented, Tefzel: 14 kg/300 m (32 lb/1000 ft)

Desiccant
Desiccant must be used with vented (gauged) deployment cable. The desiccant protects the cable and electronics from condensation of water vapor while venting is maintained. The desiccant gradually turns from blue to pink as it absorbs moisture.

  • Small desiccant – Included with all RuggedCable system purchases.
  • Large desiccant – Recommended for high-humidity environments. Desiccates 20 times more saturated air than the standard small desiccant pack.

Cable Extender
The TROLL cable extender is a titanium adapter for joining two lengths of deployment cable without signal loss. The cable extender seals the cables and provides a weight-bearing connection. An adjustable Kellems grip is included with each cable for precise installation.

Suspension Wire
Poly-coated stainless steel suspension cable is ideal for deployment of instruments with non-vented pressure sensors: Level TROLL 300, non-vented Level TROLL 500 or 700, and BaroTROLL instruments.

Material 304 stainless steel, 7 x 7 strand
Coating 15 mil polyester elastomer insulation
Weight 0.28 kg/30 m (0.60 lb/100 ft)
Overall O.D. 2.2 mm (approx. 1/16 in)
Break strength 122 kg (270 lb) with proper tightening of clips

TROLL® Com Communication Interface The TROLL Com provides the communication interface between an instrument and a desktop/laptop PC or RuggedReader handheld PC. The TROLL Com automatically converts the RS485 signal to RS232.

Twist-Lock Hanger/Backshell
The Twist-Lock hanger is a combination backshell cap and hanger used to seal and suspend a non-vented, pre-programmed instrument in a well or at another site. You can not communicate with an instrument deployed on a Twist-Lock hanger, which allows use of inexpensive suspension wire.
